The Day After Women’s Day

Women’s Day has come and gone

The flowers are wilting on the table

The gifts are unopened

Theres a certain fatigue that’s hanging around us

Another year has come and gone

And nothing much has changed

We still wake up everyday

And fight our fight in a man’s world

The pay is not equal

The work isn’t structured for a woman

We are expected to wake up to the 5am Club

But at 5am all we are barely managing is

A shower, breakfast for the family

Lunch for kids and partner

Clean counters for the rest of the day

Mopped, dusted, washed and dried

Every single aspect of housekeeping is done

Then charge to the office and try and “Fit In”

“Lean In”, “Push On”, “Roll In”, “Chin Up”, Muscle Up”,

“Charge On”, “Go The Mile”, “Kick Ass”, “Circle Back”,

“Sweat It”, “Grind It”, “Shake On It”

And finally just kick those shoes off and fall exhausted into your bed

What’s really changed?

Yes we vote now

Yes we work now

Yes we have bank accounts and can buy that piece of property

Yes we have fought hard and we have made strides

But how far have we cone

Have we really levelled up?

Are we getting our dues?

If we ask, we are too demanding

If we keep quiet we are sacrificing

One more Women’s Day has come and gone and all we are doing is waking up the next day, toiling in front of the hot stove, readying to go back to the same fight we fought yesterday, the day before and the years before that! And this will go on till we die!
