Trigger warning – Loss of cognitive capabilities because the plot is wildly crazy and it’s a movie that’s sure to cause you to jump from your seats and dance every time a song plays on the screen
Plot – Om Prakash Makhija is a junior artist in the Hindi film industry and is aspiring to strike that one role that can change his career path forever. He has a crush on the country’s heartthrob, Shantipriya who is a successful female lead. Pappu, Om’s friend manages to get them small roles in various movies and eventually also manages to get passes for a premier of Shantipriya’s movie, Dreamy Girl. They impersonate Manoj Kumar and sneak in to the screening and Om manages to catch Shantipriya’s attention.
Later, Om and Pappu get drunk and in this drunken state, Om delivers a beautiful heartfelt acceptance speech! Over the course of the next few months, Om and Pappu manage to get a small role in a movie that Shantipriya is acting in and Mukesh is the producer of. During a shoot of a fire scene, Shantipriya gets stuck in the middle of a large fire and Om rescues her. This brings Shantipriya closer to Om as a friend and he also lands a “date” with her.
During yet another shoot, Shantipriya rushes to meet Mukesh in her green room and Om winds up overhearing their conversation. He realises to his horror that Shantipriya has been secretly married to Mukesh and Mukesh doesn’t want to publicise this because he is in the midst of a large takeover. Shantipriya is pregnant and confronts Mukesh with making the news of their marriage be made public or she will be forced to let everyone know. This drives Mukesh to now plot to take Shantipriya to the sets of his new movie and eventually leave her to die under the burning set! Om witnesses this and tries his best to rescue Shantipriya but fails and ends up dying.
Rajesh Kapoor a successful movie star sees Om lying on the roadside and takes him in his car to the hospital. Incidentally his wife is in labour and is about to deliver their baby. Om succumbs to his wounds in the hospital and Rajesh’s wife delivers a boy baby.
Om Kapoor is born! Fast forward to thirty years later and Om Kapoor is Rajesh Kapoors rich, brash son, a movie star who is a heartthrob like his father. During Om Kapoors acting career, he realises he has a strong fear to fire and over time keeps having flashes of his past life. One time, during an award show, he delivers the exact acceptance speech that Om Prakash had delivered in his drunken state. Pappu watches this and realises that Om Kapoor is actually his friend Om Prakash whom they had lost to the accident. As Om Kapoor gets to know more about his past life, he is now driven to confront Mukesh and take revenge on his for destroying Shantipriya’s life. In his pursuit of making a movie under Mukesh’s banner, they find Sandhya (Sandy) who is a spitting image of Shantipriya and start plotting their revenge!
With many hits and misses, Om Kapoor, Bela and Pappu execute their plan and fumble through the revenge plot! Do they manage to get their revenge? Does Mukesh confess to his killing Shantipriya? How does the plot twist after this? Do watch it and let your thinking stay outside the theatre!
This movie was a refreshing take on all the chaos that is Bollywood! Farah Khan as the director shows us the unhinged side to the movie industry. Her comic take on everything Bollywood will keep you constantly giggling and nodding to all that happens in the film industry that has seen some of the best and the worst in movies! The actors too play along sportingly and makes for a light hearted watch. Farah Khan also introduced the concept of a male “item” song! With Shah Rukh Khan gyrating in just jeans and his six pack abs to Darde Disco is the song of the era! For once women drooled openly for their star on the screen who not only set the screen on fire but gave us the smouldering look while shaking his hips for us! The dialogues were iconic and we know that because, after over 15 plus years, we were all reciting the dialogues as they were playing on the screen! That’s the impact of a one-of-its-kind movie that brought in laughter, action and romance in complete Bollywood ishtyle!
I will give this movie a 6/10. The six is for SRK! I will need another scale for Arjun Rampal who played a villain and a super-hot one too! Is there any movie where Arjun Rampal doesn’t look good?!? The two male leads made up the movie for me! The story, execution and every other technical aspect can take a hike because there is none of it in the movie! But what it lacks, it more than made up with SRK and Arjun Rampal!
